I've added a photo I put on facebook of me staring at my work. I do spend a lot of time doing that and it's a big part of what artists do in general. It's nice to have a pithy quote on hand: Hippocrates said something like this, "life is short, art is long". Latin, "Ars longa vita brevis." But I'm pretty sure it was originally Greek.

Anyway, staring is about thinking about what a painting "needs". If you listen carefully, they will "talk" to you, and, sometimes, will even change your mind.
