All physical activities have their compellingly competitive counterparts. Swimming is a prominent example. Yet in each activity the element and pleasure of play can easily be found and that can also be very motivating.
Part of swimming's attraction may be the way water changes our perceptions of the world and ourselves. The feel of water, unfettered buoyancy, the reflection and refraction of light, how we hear sounds under water, our ability to move in any direction are all very enjoyable.
There is something else of which swimming can remind us and that is the need to take time. Time to go to the pool, time to change our clothes, time in the water. If we look at that time as a sacrifice instead of a pleasure, it becomes more difficult.
One of the things that I often hear my friends tell me of participating in any activity is how good they feel doing it. Therefore, whatever we choose to do we do for ourselves, and the time we take, we take for ourselves, for our well-being.
